Padres y Jovenes Unidos featured in Root & Branch E-Magazine
Root & Branch is the Advancement Project’s national Web-based digital magazine. Root & Branch seeks to help build grassroots movements from the bottom up by sharing thoughtful analysis aimed at uprooting systemic racism. In each quarterly issue, readers will hear the ideas of Advancement Project, a civil rights organization dedicated to racial justice, along with the ideas of grassroots leaders, organizers, scholars, and funders who are working toward progressive change on matters of race.
In this inaugural edition, Advancement Project features a story on their partnership with Padres y Jovenes Unidos, telling of their struggles to end the schoolhouse-to-jailhouse track in Denver public schools. The article describes how organizers and members of Padres y Jovenes Unidos were successful in revamping the school-discipline code to focus on prevention and intervention for typical school misbehavior while seeking an end to racial disparities. The article also describes the development of young leaders as a result of being a part of this campaign. Click here to read the entire article.
