Many urban communities are facing a severe shortage of qualified teachers. To help with the crisis, "Grow Your Own Teacher" programs are sprouting up all over the country. They educate and train non-traditional candidates from within the community to become teachers.

Farai Chideya talks with Anne Hallett, director of "Grow Your Own Illinois" and Anita Sanders, a teacher candidate in Chicago.
