Logan Square Neighborhod Association (LSNA) and Albany Park Neighborhood Council (APNC) are working in conjunction on a CPER funded Special Opportunities Project.
Founded in 1962, Logan Square Neighborhood Association is a multi-issue, grassroots, membership organization, which unites a diverse group of institutions and residents to address the challenges facing the Logan Square communities. LSNA focuses on education and school reform, health, affordable housing and economic development, immigration, and community spaces and the arts.
The Albany Park Neighborhood Council is a grassroots, community organization that unites Chicago area religious institutions, schools, universities and ethnic associations around common values of social justice. Its organizing approach involves training and developing local leadership, identifying common issues within a broader social justice analysis, creating collective and strategic ways to address those issues and systematically strengthening institutions.
CPER Funded Project
LSNA and APNC's SOF work includes:
- Conducing outreach to other Chicago education organizing organizations in immigrant communities to expand LSNA and APNC's base;
- Educating parents on different bilingual education models and the impact the current system has on students' achievement and developing ongoing strategies for improvement;
- Creating a public policy discourse around the value of the culture and language of English Language Learners (ELLs) within the school community and within school improvement strategies;
- Garnering buy-in from targeted schools for the launch of a bilingual educaion pilot project; and
- Impacting Chicago Public School (CPS) Commission, Department of Language and Culture and ELL work of the Illinois State Board of Education through public education, advocacy and media outreach.
