Abbott Leadership Institute (ALI) is a division of the Department of Urban Education at Rutgers University, Newark. The organization provides classes designed for parents and educational professionals. It also promotes special events in the Newark community, especially at its extensive network of churches and other community based organizations.

Since its inception almost five years ago, ALI has taught more than 500 individuals the art and science of engaging parents as advocates in their children's education through its classes. In 2005-06, ALI reached another 1162 people at churches, conferences and other special events, where engagement in schools and education policy was the focus.

CPER Funded Project

ALI serves as an information and training resource to the New Jersey organizing groups. ALI is sponsoring classes in Newark and Paterson pertaining to the Abbott v. Burke State Supreme Court case and the programs that have resulted from the Abbott ruling. The organization is sponsoring parent workshops and training parents to assess their schools on the Supplemental Programs mandated by Abbott.
